PILOT NURSE COMMENTS FROM SECTION A

-"I am keeping this textbook on my shelf of frequently used resources in my office."

“I probably spent more time reading than I should have because I found the information to be so interesting. I absolutely enjoyed this course. I have previously learned some information about providing transcultural care, but this course taught me so much about the cultures of patients I have been providing nursing care, that I truly did not know. I feel that I have increased my understanding of the cultures of my patients and also my colleagues. I believe having this knowledge and the book to use as a resource will improve the care I am providing and help me to be more understanding and less critical of behaviors I observe.”

-“Very interesting subject. Very timely with all the different cultures currently in the US. I think knowledge of the numerous cultures is very important in caring for patients – the text was easy to understand and provided information that was new to me.”

-"The textbook was user friendly and I feel it would become a great reference book."

-"Excellent. This is a wonderful course which should prove helpful for all nurses working with a diverse group of people/patients."

-"The text provides in-depth information and timely references. I appreciated the historical background and application to discussion regarding the specific cultures. Very enriching!"

-"The book is packed full of information that is very relevant. The content is extremely valuable for today’s constantly changing population. Absolutely fantastic course. Very relevant for anyone interacting with different cultures in the medical field. Should be required."

-"Test provides average to advanced knowledge. Very well/thoroughly resourced."

-"Fascinating information. I thought it was excellent. I was curious about the fact that it was published in 2021 that the terms social determinants of health and transgenerational were not mentioned. I think the book is well written and packed full of studies and evidence that is good to know. The book is exceptionally well-referenced. The quiz generally addressed the topics I thought most important. I added some information in the African American situation that I feel should be included, in some form."

PILOT NURSE COMMENTS FROM SECTION B

-"Too many details to remember. Will use book as a resource. I recommend taking this course and keeping the book as a resource. I learned so many interesting things about providing assessments and I enjoyed reading the history about each culture. History always helps me understand why things are done a certain way. I also feel I will be able to communicate more effectively with other cultures. I also want to mention how enjoyable it is to learn from a book and do a test on paper. We spend so much time looking at a computer screen at work, it’s so refreshing to read a book, and to have that book the shelf for future reading and reference."

-"Excellent, very well-written and user-friendly-" book. The test was fair (I mean that as a compliment). It was easy to follow right along with the text. Thank you for letting me participate. Very timely with the increase in refugees, etc. The text was great, will be a wonderful reference for working with clients of various backgrounds."

-"Excellent textbook, extremely relevant. I would definitely recommend this course for any nurse. I found it very helpful as well as most interesting."

-"I found the material to be interesting and applicable to many areas of nursing practice. Cultural awareness is so important in all aspects of healthcare and I felt that the information was enlightening and thorough."

-"A fantastic course. Should be a requirement considering our ever-changing melting pot."

-"The textbook was very informative and well-written. It contains a lot of information. Overall this is an excellent course. This study appears to be aimed at hospital nurses and not so much at other aspects of nursing."

-"Highly recommend for anyone who is looking for more information about cultural diversity in the health care setting. Subject matter is quite timely with the focus on population health and social determinants."

-"I thought the book was very well-organized but tedious in some places. This course is difficult because there was so much material that was new to me. It was, however, not too technically difficult – just the level of unfamiliarity that slowed me down. It was a great resource, and I feel much more prepared to connect with my patients who are from different cultures. Even if I cannot remember all of the details, more than anything else, it raised my overall sensitivity to and awareness of the importance of understanding my patients' “whole” story. I will keep this book handy in my unit. I think the test writer did a good job of teasing relevant information from an extraordinary amount of detail.  This is a great unit resource, especially since it is organized in such a way as to allow you to go straight to the information you need for your particular situation."

="The focus on the culture in relation to health is great and relevant. The part about the country, physical location, etc. is a bit boring and I will not remember. I thought the quiz did a good job focusing on questions related to health views and the delivery of health care. Really very much enjoyed the aspect on the culture’s views on health, conventional health care and the use of folk medicine. Some of that was fascinating. I have wished I had this earlier in my career – very relevant to today’s world. All would benefit from this course as I can’t believe anyone would have great knowledge of all of these cultures. Understanding people from the lens of their culture is super important. If we can understand the lens through which people view items and what influences their decisions, then we can more deeply see both barriers and solutions.

LEARNER COMMENTS

“Transcultural Nursing was fascinating, informative, well-written, and presented. It exponentially increased my understanding of the differences between cultures and the need to assess each patient within their cultural framework. I am sponsoring a Nigerian woman through Women For Women International. After reading about Nigerian women in this course and their relationship to Nigerian men – I was not surprised to learn that my new Nigerian sister didn’t know that girls could be educated. WOW! This is the best course I have ever taken. It was long overdue, and should be available at every nursing station. It is a terrific course, and inspiring for serving the underserved. It is empowering for women and girls. Thank you. Thank you.” J.F., CA & WA RN, 5/29/23

Transcultural Nursing: Assessment and Intervention is more important now than ever. Because minorities tend to receive a lower quality of health care even when their access to services is similar to that of nonminorities and because the diversity, ethnic, racial, age, lifestyle, economic, sexual preferences, immigration status of the U.S. population is growing, cross-cultural education in the health professions is seen as a key strategy in ending such disparities.

The text presents the six cultural phenomena believed to shape care—communication, space, social organization, time, environmental control, and biological variations. Many chapters specify how a particular racial/ethnic group (e.g., African Americans or Appalachians) may vary in these areas and how these variations must be taken into account in planning care.

Read about these Cultural Groups: • African Americans • Mexican Americans • Navajos (Diné) • Appalachians • American Eskimos • Japanese Americans • Afghans and Afghan Americans • Russian Americans • Chinese Americans • Filipino Americans • Vietnamese Americans • East Indian Hindu Americans • Haitian Americans • Jewish Americans • Korean Americans • French Canadians of Québec Origin • Puerto Ricans • Nigerian Americans • Ugandan Americans • Jordanian Americans • Cuban Americans • Amish Americans • Irish Americans.
