“I probably spent more time reading than I should have because I found the information to be so interesting. I absolutely enjoyed this course. I have previously learned some information about providing transcultural care, but this course taught me so much about the cultures of patients I have been providing nursing care, that I truly did not know. I feel that I have increased my understanding of the cultures of my patients and also my colleagues. I believe having this knowledge and the book to use as a resource will improve the care I am providing and help me to be more understanding and less critical of behaviors I observe.”

I learned so many interesting things about providing assessments and I enjoyed reading the history about each culture. History always helps me understand why things are done a certain way. I also feel I will be able to communicate more effectively with other cultures. I also want to mention how enjoyable it is to learn from a book and do a test on paper. We spend so much time looking at a computer screen at work, it’s so refreshing to read a book, and to have that book the shelf for future reading and reference."

-"I thought the book was very well-organized but tedious in some places. This course is difficult because there was so much material that was new to me. It was, however, not too technically difficult – just the level of unfamiliarity that slowed me down. It was a great resource, and I feel much more prepared to connect with my patients who are from different cultures. Even if I cannot remember all of the details, more than anything else, it raised my overall sensitivity to and awareness of the importance of understanding my patients' “whole” story. I will keep this book handy in my unit. I think the test writer did a good job of teasing relevant information from an extraordinary amount of detail.  This is a great unit resource, especially since it is organized in such a way as to allow you to go straight to the information you need for your particular situation."

="The focus on the culture in relation to health is great and relevant. The part about the country, physical location, etc. is a bit boring and I will not remember. I thought the quiz did a good job focusing on questions related to health views and the delivery of health care. Really very much enjoyed the aspect on the culture’s views on health, conventional health care and the use of folk medicine. Some of that was fascinating. I have wished I had this earlier in my career – very relevant to today’s world. All would benefit from this course as I can’t believe anyone would have great knowledge of all of these cultures. Understanding people from the lens of their culture is super important. If we can understand the lens through which people view items and what influences their decisions, then we can more deeply see both barriers and solutions.

“Transcultural Nursing was fascinating, informative, well-written, and presented. It exponentially increased my understanding of the differences between cultures and the need to assess each patient within their cultural framework. I am sponsoring a Nigerian woman through Women For Women International. After reading about Nigerian women in this course and their relationship to Nigerian men – I was not surprised to learn that my new Nigerian sister didn’t know that girls could be educated. WOW! This is the best course I have ever taken. It was long overdue, and should be available at every nursing station. It is a terrific course, and inspiring for serving the underserved.
