The 5th edition of Clinical Laboratory Science: The Basics and Routine Techniques provides introductory information needed by anyone engaged in ordering or performing laboratory assays, or analyzing laboratory data output in various settings. The purpose of this edition continues to be description of the basic concepts of laboratory medicine, to outline underlying theories of routine laboratory procedures performed in clinical laboratories, and to present applicable case studies to help students integrate theory and practice.

The book is divided into two major topic areas:

Part 1, Basic Laboratory Techniques, covers the fundamentals of the clinical laboratory such as safety, measurement techniques, and quality assessment. This section is suitable for all lab workers, including beginners and those with little or no formal science coursework. (The Section A quiz covers Part 1.)

Part 2, Clinical Laboratory Specializations, covers the clinical laboratory specialties including clinical chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, microbiology, immunology, and immunohematology. This section describes in detail many of the routine tests performed in each section of a contemporary clinical laboratory. A number of classical test methods are described, but many current test methodologies, alternative methods, automated test systems, and point-of-care testing are also discussed at length.
