In recent years, various events have increased the incidence of parasitic diseases among North Americans. Increased world travel by Americans and influx of immigrants from underdeveloped regions have resulted in increasing numbers of normally rare parasites. Changes in sexual behaviors have altered the usual epidemiology of certain parasitic infections. Patient with AIDS have contracted infections with previously rare opportunistic parasites. Globally, parasitic infections remain a serious health problem. These issues make early and correct laboratory diagnosis, and treatment by physicians, all the more critical.
