The course begins with a brief history of dialysis, revealing the trials and tribulations that have gone into the development of modern day dialysis units. It covers basic concepts related to the chemistry of body fluids and electrolytes. This is followed by a review of renal physiology, and from there, the course progresses to a discussion of pathology of renal failure and clinical manifestations of chronic kidney disease.
At this point the course switches to equipment requirements of dialysis. Various dialyzers, concentrations of dialysate, principles of hemodialysis, water treatment principles, and dialyzer preparation and reprocessing principles are reviewed. There is a detailed section on infection control.
Anticoagulation administration is discussed, including expected actions, lab values and side effects to monitor. There is a section on all types of access devices currently available to the dialysis patient. Various challenges for dialysis patients are discussed, including topics such as poor nutrition and special renal diets, role of diabetes and renal disease, and medications commonly prescribed to dialysis patients. This course covers the entire lifespan, from a chapter on pediatric dialysis cases (caused by genetic anomalies, infections, etc.) to the elderly population.
The course concludes with discussions on psychosocial aspects of dialysis therapy, maintaining quality in dialysis units, and how to perform basic math calculations that arise daily in the dialysis unit.
